Navagraha Shanti Puja & Jaap
Navagraha Shanti Puja is a powerful Vedic ritual dedicated to the nine celestial deities (planets) that govern human destiny. The word Navagraha is derived from Nava (nine) and Graha (planets/influencers). This puja is performed to pacify malefic planetary influences, strengthen well-placed planets, and bring balance, prosperity, and harmony into an individual's life.
Surya (Sun) – Governs soul, health, and authority.
Chandra (Moon) – Governs mind, emotions, and mother.
Mangal (Mars) – Governs energy, courage, and anger.
Budha (Mercury) – Governs intellect, communication, and business.
Guru/Brihaspati (Jupiter) – Governs wisdom, luck, and wealth.
Shukra (Venus) – Governs relationships, luxury, and art.
Shani (Saturn) – Governs karma, discipline, and longevity.
Rahu (North Node) – Governs desires, obsession, and sudden shifts.
Ketu (South Node) – Governs spirituality, detachment, and liberation.
When certain planets are unfavorably positioned in a person's birth chart (causing Doshas like Shani Dhayya, Sade Sati, Manglik Dosha, or Kaal Sarp Dosha), they manifest as obstacles, illnesses, or sudden losses. The Navagraha Shanti Puja uses specific geometric mandalas, targeted seed mantras, and fire offerings to harmonize these cosmic forces, transforming negative planetary vibrations into supportive, positive energies.

1. Astrological Timing & Sankalpa
An auspicious date (Muhurat) is calculated based on the devotee’s birth chart, typically choosing an auspicious day like a Monday, Thursday, or Saturday.
The ritual begins with the Sankalpa (sacred intent), where the priest recites the devotee's name, lineage (Gotra), and specific desires or problems to be resolved.
2. Ganesha Puja & Kalash Sthapana
Lord Ganesha is invoked first to remove any obstacles during the ceremony.
A Kalash (sacred copper pot filled with holy water, mango leaves, and a coconut) is installed to invite the divine energies of the cosmic deities.
3. Navagraha Mandala Setup & Invocation
A specific nine-square Navagraha Mandala is drawn using colorful grains, rice, or powder.
Nine distinct idols or betel nuts representing each planet are placed in their designated cosmic directions.
Specific colors, flowers, and grains associated with each planet (e.g., ruby/wheat for the Sun, black sesame/black cloth for Saturn) are offered to their respective squares.
4. Mantra Japa (Chanting)
The priests chant the dedicated Vedic or Puranic mantras for all nine deities. A common collective prayer chanted is the Navagraha Stotram, along with individual seed mantras such as:
For the Sun: Om Ghrini Suryaya Namaha
For Saturn: Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namaha
For Jupiter: Om Brim Brihaspataye Namaha
5. Navagraha Homa (Fire Ritual)
A sacred sacrificial fire is lit.
Priests offer special wood (Samidha) specific to each planet (e.g., Ark wood for the Sun, Shami wood for Saturn) into the fire along with ghee and herbs, accompanied by final mantra recitations.
6. Aarti & Prasad Distribution
The puja concludes with a grand collective Aarti for the Navagrahas and Lord Shiva/Vishnu.
The energized water from the Kalash is sprinkled around the house, and blessed food (Prasad) is distributed to finalize the blessings.
