Chandra Grah Shanti Puja
The Chandra Grah Shanti Puja is a sacred Vedic astrological ritual dedicated to Chandra Dev (the Moon God), one of the most vital celestial bodies in the Navagraha (nine planets). It is primarily performed to pacify an afflicted, weak, or ill-placed Moon in a person's birth chart, helping to stabilize emotions, heal mental distress, and bring peace and prosperity into the devotee's life
In Vedic astrology, Chandra Dev rules over the human mind (Manas), emotions, instincts, intuition, fertility, and fluid balances in the body. He is the lord of the zodiac sign Cancer (Karka) and is deeply connected to maternal energy, nourishment, and psychology. As beautifully depicted in the image, Chandra Dev is traditionally shown as a serene, glowing deity holding white lotuses and riding a swift antelope or deer, symbolizing the fast and wandering nature of the human mind.
When the Moon is weak, debilitated (in Scorpio), or afflicted by malefic planets like Rahu, Ketu, or Saturn (causing conditions like Grahan Dosha or Kemadruma Yoga), it directly disrupts a person's psychological well-being. It can lead to severe mood swings, depression, emotional hypersensitivity, chronic anxiety, and strained relationships with one's mother. The Chandra Grah Shanti Puja works to correct these subtle cosmic imbalances, infusing the devotee's consciousness with cooling, soothing, and emotionally stabilizing lunar energies.
Emotional Stability & Mental Peace: Significantly reduces anxiety, depression, erratic mood swings, and overthinking, bringing deep mental tranquility.
Improves Relationships: Fosters harmonious relationships, especially strengthening the sacred bond between the devotee and their mother or maternal figures.
Enhances Intuition and Creativity: Sharpens imaginative thinking, artistic pursuits, emotional intelligence, and gut instincts.
Remedies Birth Chart Defects: Neutralizes the harmful impacts of Chandra Dosha, a weak Moon transit, or a challenging Chandra Mahadasha/Antardasha.
Physical Health Benefits: Aids in treating health conditions related to body fluids, blood pressure, lungs, respiratory blocks, insomnia, and fertility.
1. Preparation & Timing
The Ideal Day: The ritual must be performed on a Monday (Somvar), which is ruled by the Moon, or on a Full Moon Day (Purnima).
Auspicious Color: The color white is deeply connected to Chandra Dev. The devotee should ideally wear white clothing, and white flowers are used to decorate the altar.
Offerings: Items representing the moon are gathered, including raw milk, curd, white rice, sugar, camphor, sandalwood, and silver or pearls.
2. Core Puja Rituals
Ganesha & Shiva Puja: The ritual begins with prayers to Lord Ganesha. Because Lord Shiva wears the crescent moon on his head and governs Chandra Dev, a short prayer or milk libation (Abhishek) to Lord Shiva is often performed first.
Sankalpa (Vow): The priest recites the devoteeβs name, birth chart details (Nakshatra and Rashi), and family lineage (Gotra), anchoring the intention of the puja toward emotional healing and pacifying Chandra Dosha.
Navagraha Mandala Setup: A sacred geometric mandala is prepared, and Chandra Dev is formally invoked into his specific seat among the nine planets.
Mantra Japa: The pandits chant the traditional Chandra Beej Mantra 11,000 times (or a higher scriptural count) using a pearl or crystal rosary:
"Om Shram Shreem Shroum Sah Chandraya Namah"
The Havan (Fire Ritual): A sacred fire is kindled. Offerings of cow ghee, white rice mixed with sugar, and specific medicinal herbs are dedicated to the fire. Wood sticks from the Palash tree, which is sacred to the Moon, are used for the havan.
3. Conclusion
Aarti & Chandra Darshan: The ceremony concludes with the performance of the Aarti. If performed in the evening, devotees look at the physical moon and offer sacred water (Arghya) mixed with milk and rice.
Donation (Dana): To maximize the positive effects, the devotee is encouraged to donate white itemsβsuch as milk, rice, white clothes, or sugarβto a priest, a temple, or those in need on that Monday.
Prasad Distribution: The sanctified prasad is shared with family members to invite domestic harmony and mental clarity.
