1. Pre-Ritual Setup & Altar Preparation (Shuddhi)
Auspicious Timing: This ritual can be performed on any clean day, but starting on an Ekadashi, a Thursday, or during Gita Jayanti is considered exceptionally rewarding.
Altar Arrangement: Clean the designated prayer area thoroughly. Set up a wooden platform (Chowki) and drape it with a clean yellow or red cloth.
Deity Installation: Place an idol or image of Lord Krishna (ideally depicting him as Gitopadeshโ€”guiding Arjuna on the chariot).
The Sacred Text Setup: Place the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita book on a beautiful wooden bookstand (Vyaspeeth or Rehal). Wrap the book respectfully in a clean red or saffron cloth when not being read.
2. Initial Invocations & Sankalp
Lighting the Lamp: Light a large deepam using pure cow ghee or sesame oil to maintain an uninterrupted positive frequency throughout the reading.
Ganesha & Guru Vandana: Before touching the sacred text, prayers are offered to Lord Ganesha to remove any intellectual or physical obstacles, followed by prayers to one's Guru.
Sankalp (The Vow): Hold a small amount of water, fresh yellow flowers, and raw rice grains in your right hand. The priest (or you) recites your name, family lineage (Gotra), and your specific intentโ€”whether you are reading it for a family member's peace, ancestral elevation, mental clarity, or pure devotion. Let the water drop to the earth to seal the vow.
3. Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Dhyanam
Before chanting the verses, it is a strict Vedic tradition to recite the Gita Dhyanam (9 meditative verses). This acts as a salutation to the text itself, honoring the Gita as the divine mother and the literal breath of Lord Krishna.
4. The Core Path Procedure (Reading/Chanting)
Chanting Style: The text can be read in two ways depending on the time allocated:
Sampoorna Path: Reading all 18 chapters continuously in a single day (takes approximately 4 to 5 hours).
Khanda Path: Dividing the chapters over 7 or 9 days (often reading 2 to 3 chapters daily).
Mantra Awareness: A flower or tulsi leaf is offered at the beginning of each chapter. The reader must maintain steady breathing, sitting straight on a comfortable mat (Asana), reading the Sanskrit verses cleanly, followed by their translation.
5. The Katha Procedure (Narration & Discourse)
If a Katha is being conducted alongside the path:
The Speaker's Seat: The narrator (Vyas) sits on a slightly elevated seat to address the gathering.
Chapter Summaries: After the path of a specific chapter concludes, the speaker breaks down the core philosophy, such as Karma Yoga (the path of selfless action), Bhakti Yoga (the path of devotion), or Jnana Yoga (the path of knowledge).
Storytelling: The speaker weaves in relevant episodes from the Mahabharata to explain why Krishna gave specific advice to Arjuna, making the ancient wisdom relatable to daily modern struggles.
6. Conclusion (Aarti & Pushpanjali)
Bhog Offering: Offer fresh milk sweets, butter and misri (Lord Krishna's favorite), or seasonal fruits to the deity.
Gita Aarti: Stand up with the family and perform the specialized Gita Aarti ("Jai Bhagavad Gite...") using a camphor or ghee lamp, followed by the Krishna Aarti.
Pushpanjali & Forgiveness: Offer fresh flowers to the book and the deity. Recite a brief forgiveness prayer (Kshama Prarthana) for any accidental mispronunciations of the Sanskrit phonetics during the reading.
