Purificatory Rituals (Pravritti & Shuddhi)
Cleanliness: The puja room and the kitchen area are thoroughly cleaned. The host takes a bath and wears clean clothes (preferably light pink, yellow, or white).
Achaman & Anganyas: The ritual begins with the sipping of holy water (Achaman) and chanting mantras to purify the physical body and senses.
2. Setup & Installation (Sthapana)
Dhanya Pitha (Seat of Grains): A wooden platform (Chowki) is set up and covered with a red or yellow cloth. A clean pile of raw grains (typically rice or wheat) is formed on the platform.
Prana Pratishta: The idol or image of Maa Annapurna—traditionally depicting her holding a golden bowl (Amrita Kalash) and a ladle—is placed carefully over the bed of grains. A Kalash filled with clean water, a coin, and mango leaves topped with a coconut is placed nearby to invite cosmic energies.
3. Core Rituals (Shodashopachara Puja)
Sankalp (The Vow): Holding water, unbroken rice grains (Akshat), and flowers in the right hand, the host declares their name, family lineage (Gotra), and their intent—praying specifically for continuous nourishment, the removal of financial hunger, and domestic peace.
Panchamrit Abhishek: The deity is symbolically or physically bathed with a mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar, followed by clear water.
Archana: Offerings of vermilion (Kumkum), turmeric (Haldi), and fresh flowers are made while chanting her names.
Annapurna Stotra Path: The priests or the family recites the Annapurna Stotra composed by Adi Shankaracharya. This highly rhythmic text praises her role as the ultimate provider.
4. The Yagna (Fire Ceremony)
Agni Sthapana: A sacred fire is kindled in a Havan Kund using dry mango wood and camphor.
Mantra Offerings: Offerings of a special mixture containing ghee, raw rice, black sesame, and dry fruits are made into the holy fire. With every offering (Ahuti), the main mantra is chanted:
“Om Hreem Shreem Kleem Annapurnaye Namah Svaha”
Annakut Bhog: Because she is the goddess of food, a grand offering (Bhog) consisting of a variety of freshly cooked vegetarian dishes, seasonal fruits, and sweets (especially rice kheer) is presented to the fire and the deity.
5. Conclusion (Purnaahuti & Aarti)
Final Offering: The remaining ritual items are offered together in a grand final gesture (Purnaahuti).
Aarti: The family stands and performs the Annapurna Maa Aarti using a camphor or ghee lamp.
Kitchen Blessing: A small amount of the holy water (Teerth) and the ashes from the yagna are collected. It is traditional to symbolically sprinkle a few drops of this water inside your kitchen or storage pantry to welcome permanent abundance into the home.
